Permanent positions

A junior researcher position

Context: The laboratory Glass surface and interfaces (SVI) is a joined laboratory between the CNRS and Saint-Gobain. It is located in the R&D center of Saint-Gobain Research Paris and its activity is devoted to developing fundamental research in relevant domains for Saint-Gobain.

The development of thin films or nanostructures on the glass surface and the durability of these systems rely on material transport mechanisms at the surface and through the layers. For example, it is possible to mention the diffusion of sodium from solid glass to thin films during annealing, which can then degrade the interfaces between layers, or the solid dewetting of the silver during annealing. Experimental studies of these phenomena are ongoing researches at SVI, which address mostly these issues from the perspective of developing nanostructured surfaces, and also from the perspective of fundamental understanding of transport mechanisms in the layers. These mechanisms are still poorly understood, the confined geometry of the layers being an element of difficulty, and they can, therefore, constitute a thematically rich topic in solid physics.

Activities: The SVI laboratory wishes to recruit a researcher to work on the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of transport on the glass surface and in the layers and nanostructures and to reinforce the skills in solid state physics and materials science of the laboratory. The main missions will be:

  • Develop research actions on the glass, the surfaces and the thin films studied at SVI in interaction with R&D researchers in the departments of SGR Paris.
  • The elaboration solid materials and their characterization.
  • Identify and model the transport phenomena at a small scale.
  • Supervise internships, and Ph.D. students or technicians.
  • Develop collaborations with academic laboratories in the field of material science.
  • Publish scientific articles.

The successful candidate will benefit from a multidisciplinary environment within the Glass, Surface and Films team (4 permanent researchers), and from the possibility to work on original materials inspired by industrial processes, or using original techniques mastered in the laboratory (magnetron sputtering, high-throughput methods, nano-imprint of sol-gel layers, dewetting of layers, etc.) which are useful for example to study the glass transport mechanisms (diffusion in the glass or the phase separation in the glass). The possibility of producing a very varied set of silicate glass chemistries, layer stacks, and nanostructures, is a strong point of SVI.

Required Skills: The candidates must have a recent Ph.D. in the field of experimental solid-state physics or material science. The candidate should be interested in going back and forth between modeling and experiments on model materials and be interested both in fundamental research and industrial R&D. The recruited person will carry out mostly an experimental activity dedicated to the characterization of the phenomena of transport in the studied materials at SVI. English writing and speaking are mandatory.

It is possible to prepare a Ph.D. diploma within the laboratory and we always have 4-6 Ph.D. students.

  • French diplomas: Many of our Ph.D. students defend their Ph.D. at one of the Universities in the region of Paris at other French academic institutions. Most of the PhDs are a part of formal national or internal collaborations. Therefore, Ph.D. students often spend a part of their training period on other academic sites in France or abroad. The Ph.D. is in general financed through the mixed industrial/public contract CIFRE.
  • International diplomas: we receive exchange students through our international collaboration and we sometimes have access to European Ph.D. scholarships. Furthermore, many of our students go abroad for extended periods during the preparation of their Ph.D.

Some of the master projects we propose may be followed by a Ph.D. with CIFRE funding.
